CEDAR RAPIDS – A one-vehicle accident involving a dump truck caused more than $16,000 in damages and shut down power to a recycling center after it struck a utility pole, fire hydrant, and phone box this morning.
According to Sgt. Cristy Hamblin, Steven Brown, 38, of Cedar Rapids, was driving an ABC dump truck westbound on Ingleside Dr. SW when he lost control and drove off the left side of the road at 9:51 a.m. Thursday. He struck an Alliant energy pole, a city fire hydrant, and a phone junction box in front of City Carton Inc. recycling center at 901 Ingleside Dr. SW.
Brown was uninjured, but the 2002 Mac truck was leaking diesel, Hamblin said.
The Cedar Rapids fire department and a Department of Transportation vehicle responded to the incident. Brown was charged with failure to maintain control.
The crash caused $5,000 in damages for the energy pole, $4,000 for the hydrant, and $2,000 for the phone box. The truck was towed, and incurred $6,000 in damages, Hamblin said.
According to Alan Schumacher, facilities manager for City Carton Inc., the recycling center lost all power for operations from 9:52 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. due to the crash.
Schumacher said the plant will be able to accept all materials as regularly scheduled beginning again tomorrow. Regular sorting operations will be up and running by 6 a.m. tomorrow, he said.
According to Schumacher, the center worked with several businesses to have them bring in their materials later this afternoon or wait until tomorrow.
