Lake Delhi Dam Attracts Tourists

DELHI – The Lake Delhi area still works on recovering from the weekend’s disastrous dam break. People are driving for miles just to see the damage.

Lake Delhi has always attracted tourists, but now people are coming here for a much different reason.

“It’s definitely worth the trip to see,” Joyce Burington said.

Richard Baker said, “I wanted my children to see it. I like them to go see this kind of stuff and see what can happen.”

Tammy and Richard Baker drove 45 miles out of the way on their family vacation to take a peek at the dam.

Plenty of others also made a special trip to see what water can do and to take a snap shot of this historic moment.

Delhi residents have mixed feelings about all the attention and curiosity.

“Everybody is rushing to get stuff out of their homes right now, a lot of people are getting in the way, but we appreciate that they care,” Rose Putz said.

Flooding disasters have become all too familiar in Iowa. Many people have friends or loved ones who have lost something in a flood.

“I feel bad for the people who live here. They are going to have a mess to deal with for a long time,” Richard Baker said.

Over the next few weeks and months locals expect plenty of people will come and take a look at the dam. They just hope this people will also reach out and help.
