A section of Highway 136 eight miles south of Cascade will be closed for several months for repairs after it was undermined by flooding on the Maquoketa River.
Flooding caused the damage over about 200-300 feet of pavement in a one-half mile stretch between the main channel of the Maquoketa River and an overflow bridge, according to John Wilson, district maintenance manager for the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Wilson said it’s the only long-lasting damage he’s seen so far to roadways from the weekend floods in District 6, which includes Cedar Rapids. In most areas, the floods only washed out gravel shoulders which could quickly be replaced.
Flood damage to Business Route 151 in Monticello from weekend flooding Maquoketa River probably won’t take long to repair once floodwaters recede, a county highway official said.
Jones County Engineer Mike McClain said Monday that he had heard reports of serious damage to the busy route, and one member of his staff has been on the scene.
McClain said the flooding caused some erosion to the shoulder on the north side of the river bridge and the south side of the river bridge. He said he expects the stretch to be reopened later this week.
Business Route 151 is one of about a dozen roads closed by the weekend flooding on the Maquoketa River and Wapsipinicon River in Jones County, McClain said, including Lead Mine Road, Jungletown Road, and County Road E-17.
“Any time water gets over a road, damage is possible,” McClain said. .
